Top 10 Spinal Injuries
The soft tissues of the spine (muscles and ligaments) may be injured due to overloading or awkward positioning. Individuals who are physically de- conditioned are susceptible to straining injuries of the lower back. Typically the pain that results will resolve spontaneously, although if severe it may require non-surgical supportive treatment, such as physical therapy or analgesic medication.
A more severe form of strain injury is vertebral fracture. If the vertebral fracture is not associated with nerve or spinal cord symptoms it may be possible to treat the injury by non-surgical means. However, if the vertebral fracture has resulted in real or potential instability of the spine, then surgical treatment is warranted. This is especially true for fractures causing nerve root or spinal cord symptoms.
